I don't think the hypocarcy is quite that relevant. There is great line in the Clash DVD Westway to the world, where Joe Strummer is talking about their drummer Topper Headon getting into smack. The emphasis isnt so much about drugs in general but the effect of the particular drug on the player. Heroin being a suppressant not a stimulant.
"Heroin is an acceptable drug for, say, horn players becuase they just float across the the beat painting nice colours and creating light and shade. Drummers, however, are the rock at the back. They have to be banging in that nail- bang - bang - bang, and everyone else follows it. Once the drummer is using smack, the whole sound falls apart from the bottom up.

Unlike all the other reunion gigs popping up I don't think Slash, Duff, or Axl need the dough and that is usually the only real reason for doing it. Look at Crue. Tommy and Vince couldnt be in the same room as each other except when press or performance demanded it. Don't tell me they did that recent reunion tour for old times sake.
